Brown Tract pond is a great choice if you want to get away from the crowds, or large trailers and RV's. The campground offers more tent specific campsites then most other DEC campgrounds in the Adirondacks. Although it has flush toilets, there is no hot water, and it does not have a shower building.
Looking at the satellite image you can see that Lower Buck Pond on which the campground is situated isn't overly large and is surrounded by dense forest. Most sites are quite shady. You can check out the satellite view in more detail.
The road into Brown Tract is a long gravel road. 2.2 miles if you are coming in from the north via Raquette Lake, or 11.7 miles if you are coming South from Eagle Bay. You're best bet coming from the South is to go in from Raquete Lake rather than have to drive slow on an 11.7 mile gravel road.
A good portion of sites are not so level, and many have a grade down to the pad or even walk-up to the pad. Some are near water level, many are up from the water with a pathway down to the water.
If you are more into walk-in sites for your tent, with good to excellent privacy, then consider site 23, 69, 70, 73 or 87.
Sites 80-82 are up on a hill way off the water. Most of these are more suited for tents. Many are walk-up and walk-down. This would be my least favorite choice as you are away from the water and have the hills to deal with.
Sites 83-90 are quite far from any flush toilets, and are only serviced by pit toilets.
If you stay at Brown Tract Pond, I highly recommend you take in the dinner cruise on Raquette Lake. Also nearby you can tour the Great Camp Sagamore which was build by Durant and owned by the Vanderbilt's. If you do both Camp Sagamore and the Raquette Lake dinner cruise, you will get a $7 off discount. If you love beaches, then head over to enjoy the great beach at Golden Beach Campground, just 13 minutes north of the campground on Raquette Lake. You can enjoy the facilities there with your Brown Tract Pond camping permit.
